Did you know that the medications you take can affect your massage session? All medications should be listed on your initial intake form and updated as medications change.  Side effects of medications must be taken into consideration by your massage therapist as he/she prepares your session?   This has come up many times over the course of my career as a massage therapist.  I call these “Teaching Moments”.

For example, did you know…..

  •  Blood thinners such as Warfarin (Coumadin), Plavix, Aspirin, etc.,  would prevent you from receiving deep pressure since that level of pressure could cause bruising.
  • High blood pressure, if not regulated by medication, would require a massage that encourages relaxation using slow, soothing strokes where the opposite would occur with a more intense massage using deep pressure techniques.   High blood pressure not regulated by medication would also require your doctors permission.
  • A full body massage for someone with Diabetes could cause a drop in their blood sugar level.  A client who has diabetes should always bring their glucose tablets with them to their massage session.  The therapist should stay away from any recent injection site.  Also, if a client has any loss of sensation due to neuropathy, deep pressure should not be used.  Communication between client and therapist is of utmost importance so you can enjoy your massage session.
If you begin to take medications together we will find your new “normal” in regards to your massage session.  Communication is the key!
