Alicia Lingenfelter, LMT, OMT, CMLDT
I became a massage therapist in order to help my mom. She went through hip replacement surgery and developed complications that did not allow her to rehab in a timely manner. When I started massage school I had chronic back pain from a fall years prior. I had to sit on a pillow and support my low back with a pillow. About 3 months into training I realized my back did not hurt any longer. I could sit without pillows and pain! At that moment I realized how powerful touch was and became even more excited to pursue a career as a massage therapist.
I chose to specialize in working with women because, frankly, I am one. I know what women go through. I understand the life changes and emotional issues we deal with. I understand the pressure of trying to work, take care of the family, keep close contact with elderly parents and in-laws, all while praying I might get to squeeze out a quiet moment for myself. Then let's talk menopause. If you are or have experienced menopause I really don't need to say anything. Hot flashes, headaches, insomnia...should I go on? So I guess I am just saying I can relate!
Two groups I felt led to work with are cancer patients and the elderly. I lost a sister to a rare form of brain cancer over 20+ years ago and a year after graduating from massage school my dad was diagnosed with a form of leukemia (He is doing great!). I have a passion to bring moments of comfort to those going through cancer treatment and to help those who have completed treatments to find their body's "new normal". The elderly hold a special place in my heart because so many are touch deprived. Nothing is more precious to me than being invited into their world as they share their stories of days gone by as I give them their massage. Touch is powerful. Touch shows them that they are important, cared for, and loved. Priceless!
